Bexley Biker on Wooded Trail

Back to School Biking Tips

It won’t be long before students are back to school. One of the great advantages of living in Bexley is that many students can walk or ride their bikes to Bexley Elementary School, which is right within the community.

As the calendar counts down to the upcoming school year it’s important to keep safety top of mind. Pasco County Firefighter and paramedic Liam Simmonds, and Bexley resident shares some simple tips.

  • Children under age 16 are required to wear a bike helmet. If your youngster plans to bike to school, it’s important that their helmet fits properly. To ensure the correct fit,  check out this video here.

  • Be sure that your child’s bike has lights and reflectors on it if they’ll be biking in the early morning hours, at sunset or at night. It’s also a good idea for your child to wear reflective clothing, if possible.

  • Check your child’s bike regularly to ensure it is in working order and that the brakes work properly.

  • Adults, keep an eye out for kids in the roadways and on sidewalks.

  • Be sure to stop for buses that are loading and unloading children. It’s the law!
